Johns Hopkins and Apollo Hospitals Group in India Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Initiate Medical and Business Collaborations

Baltimore, Maryland U.S.A. – Johns Hopkins Medicine International and Apollo Hospitals Group in India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on July 14, 2005 that will mark the beginning of the relationship between the largest private healthcare provider in India and Johns Hopkins Medicine. The Johns Hopkins Hospital was recently ranked number one in the United States for the 15th consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report magazine.


The MOU signed establishes areas of collaboration between the two organizations including Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs, partnerships with clinical departments especially in Oncology, Neurosciences and Cardiology, nurse education, telemedicine, and second opinion services. Using telemedicine, Apollo foundation’s sites will be able to offer second opinions as well as request teleconsultations with specialists at Johns Hopkins. Clinical trials will be conducted according to international standards and protocols to explore cost effective alternatives for providing better patient care.

Administrative and consultancy partnerships will also be part of the MOU. Definitive agreements with financial frameworks will be discussed and concluded in the next 90 days.

Apollo and AmCare Labs International, affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medical International, now are discussing the set up of a central reference lab in India, serving all the hospitals managed by Apollo, as well as other hospitals throughout Asia.

There is also a plan to set up a premiere facility, jointly with Johns Hopkins Medicine, in Minimally Invasive Surgery in one of the main cities in India.
